Signal is a cross-platform centralized encrypted messaging service developed by the Signal Foundation and Signal Messenger. It uses internet to send one-to-one and group voice and video calls, and the android can optionally function as an SMS app.

On 21 Feb. 2018 , Moxie Marlinspike and Whats App co-founder Brain Acton announced the formation of the Signal Foundation, a 5001(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to support, accelerate and broaden Signal's mission of making private communication accessible and ubiquitous.

 

The foundation was started with an initial $50 million in funding from Acton, who had left Whats App's parent company Facebook in September 2017. According to the announcement, Acton is the foundation's executive chairman and Marlinspike continues as the CEO of Signal Messenger. As of 2021, Signal ran entirely on donations, as nonprofit.

On 7 January 2021, Signal saw a surge in new user registrations, which temporarily overwhelmed Signal's capacity to deliver account verification messages. CNN and Mac Rumors linked the surge with a Whats App privacy policy change and Signal endorsement by Elon Musk and Edward Snowden via Twitter. International news papers reported similar trends in UAE. Reuters reported that more than 100,000 people had installed Signal App between 7 and 8 January.

Between 12 and 14 January 2021, the number of Signal installation listed on Google Play Store increased from 10 million to over 50 million. On 15 January 2021, due to the surge of new users, Signal was overwhelmed with the new traffic and was down for all users. On the afternoon of 16 January, Signal announced via Twitter that the service had been restored.

Now when we install the Signal App in our device it asks for:

Access to Contacts: in order to connect with your friends, exchange messages, and make secure calls.

Access to Media: in order to send and receive images, videos and documents.

Access to Files: in order to store media stuffs such as images, videos, documents etc.

 After that Signal App asks to enter your mobile phone number. Select the country and enter your phone number and a verification code will be sent to the given number. In code box, enter a verification code what you have received in your mobile number and hit OK button. After that setup your profile by uploading your photo and write your first name and last name. Then after it asks to create your PIN. PIN must be at least 4 digits. It also gives you a option to create alphanumeric PIN, what PIN you have easy to memorize choose that one option.Enjoy the  Signal App to communicate with your friends.

Your Signal PIN is a code used to support features like non-phone number based identifiers. This means that your PIN can recover your profile, settings, contacts, and who you've blocked if you ever lose or switch devices. A PIN can also serve as an optional registration lock to prevent others from registering your number on your behalf.

To enable this,Signal developed secure value recovery which keeps your social graph unknown to Signal servers. This is unlike other apps and platforms that store this kind of data in plain text on their servers.

Important: 

👉A PIN is not a chat backup. Your message history is not linked to a PIN and PIN cannot be used to recover lost chat history.

👉Signal server doesn't know your PIN and cannot reset or recover it for you.

👉Signal includes a built in reminder feature that uses spaced repetition. To help you memorize your PIN, Signal will periodically ask you to confirm it. These Reminders occurs at the following intervals after the feature is first enabled.

🇶4. Can I turn off these reminders?

👉It is important to memorize your PIN. Signal cannot recover your PIN if you forget it.

You will see the reminders  less frequently if you consistently enter your PIN correctly. The reminders will become  more frequent if multiple attempts are necessary.

🇶5. What if I forget my PIN?

👉Signal cannot reset the pin for you. If  you have access to the active mobile device you can change the PIN at any time.

👉If you have Registration Lock enabled and do not have access to your old phone, you will need to wait for the PIN to expire.

👉If you do not have a Registration Lock, you can still get started with Signal. Tap SKIP in the top corner.

🇶6. I know my PIN,why is it not accepted?

👉Check that the date and time settings for your phone  are set correctly for your time zone.

🇶7.When does the Registration Lock expire?

👉Registration Lock Expires after 7 days of inactivity. If you don't have access to the previously registered device and cannot remember your PIN, you will be able to register for Signal again after waiting for the expiration period to pass.

The inactivity timer is reset to 7 days each time you open a linked device like Signal Desktop or iPad.

🇶8. How does Signal help ensure that PINs don't expires for less active users?

👉The expiration time out counter is reset whenever a client connects to the Signal Service.In addition to activities like sending or receiving a message, the android and ios apps will make occasional requests to the server so that the PIN is kept alive.
